College and Career
Senior Institute
Eleventh and 12th grade is when SOF students engage in their preparations for college. Our curriculum for this extended process is called Senior Institute.
SOF high school college counselor Felix Shen guides students in the process of choosing and applying for college, including how to write an effective application essay. We also offer Calculus, Physics 2, and AP classes, which are certified as “College Readiness Courses” by the NYC DOE.
Students can also take College Now courses at Baruch College and Hunter College as a further demonstration of college readiness. They can earn credits that may be accepted/transferable.
SOF organizes trips for juniors and seniors to visit colleges throughout New York City and, when conditions allow, to Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC. And several colleges run recruitment presentations at our school.
Many of our students have been accepted into selective colleges: Barnard, Brandeis, Columbia University, Cornell, Emerson, Georgetown, Middlebury, NYU, Tufts, University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia, USC, Wesleyan, and Yale. Our students do very well with acceptances to New York’s SUNY and CUNY schools.
Internship Program
Students can gain valuable career experience through our internship program. We offer in-house internships in Restorative Justice, Tutoring, and Tech Support. Students can also choose internships from external organizations pertaining to the arts, business, community service, education, museums, schools, and so forth.
